THE INTERNATIONAL OLYMPIC COMMITTEE (IOC) HAS CONVENED AN OLYMPIC SUMMIT ON 8 DECEMBER 2018 IN LAUSANNE.

Discussions will focus on several topics of interest and concern to the Olympic Movement, including: the Athletes’ Rights and Responsibilities Declaration, the Olympic Agenda 2020/New Norm, the Youth Olympic Games Dakar 2022, ASOIF and AIOWF good governance reports and the Olympism in Action Forum, held in October 2018 in Buenos Aires.

The Olympic Summit will also discuss the progress of the International Testing Agency (ITA), six months into its existence, and will discuss the approach of the Olympic Movement to egames/sports.

The Olympic Summit involves leading representatives of the Olympic Movement. It forms part of the ongoing dialogue and consultation on important issues and subjects of significance for the future of the Olympic Movement.

THE INTERNATIONAL OLYMPIC COMMITTEE (IOC) AND SAMSUNG ELECTRONICS CO. LTD, (SAMSUNG) TODAY ANNOUNCED AN EXTENSION TO THEIR GLOBAL OLYMPIC PARTNERSHIP THROUGH TO 2028.

The announcement was made in Seoul, Republic of Korea, at a signing ceremony with IOC President Thomas Bach and Jay Y. Lee, Vice Chairman at Samsung Electronics; IOC Marketing Commission Chair Tsunekazu Takeda; Dong Jin Koh, President and CEO of the IT&Mobile Communications Division at Samsung Electronics; and Younghee Lee, CMO and Executive Vice President, Samsung Electronics. 

Samsung will continue as the Worldwide Olympic Partner in the wireless communications equipment and computing equipment category, including the ability to promote the Artificial Intelligence, Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality and 5G features of that equipment. As part of the agreement, the IOC and Samsung will further develop their strategic digital collaboration to engage young generations around the world in order to promote the power of sport and the values of Olympism.

IOC President Thomas Bach said: “I am delighted that we will be building on two decades of partnership with Samsung for another 10 years. Over this time, we have built a partnership combining Olympic excellence and Samsung’s industry-leading wireless communications technology. Together, we are able to connect with and inspire Olympic athletes and fans around the world, and we look forward to working with Samsung to build the digital future of the Olympic Games.”

IOC Marketing Commission Chair Tsunekazu Takeda said: “Samsung is a global success story and a brand recognised around the world. From a commercial perspective, our extension with Samsung to 2028 builds on the long-term agreements reached recently with existing and new Partners, and demonstrates the long-term strength and appeal of our marketing programmes.”

Samsung will continue its support beyond the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, and will support every edition of the Olympic Games through to Los Angeles 2028, as well as all the Youth Olympic Games through to 2028. Samsung will also continue to support the IOC, the National Olympic Committees and their teams. Samsung’s first Games as a Worldwide TOP Partner were the Olympic Winter Games Nagano 1998. Samsung will also continue as a Worldwide Partner of the International Paralympic Committee, extending a relationship that began in 2006.

In collaboration with the IOC and the Organising Committees, Samsung plans to continue its Athlete Phone Programme. This programme provides Limited Olympic Edition Galaxy phones to all participating Olympic and Paralympic athletes to enhance the athletes’ Games-time experience, help them stay in touch with their family and friends, and capture and share their journeys.

The Rwanda National Olympic and Sports Committee (RNOSC) organized and hosted a Sports Marketing and Tourism workshop which kicked off, 24th to 26th October 2018.

A maximum of 40 participants from the Ministry of Sports and Culture (MINISPOC), Rwanda National Olympic and sports Committee, National Sports Federations and Sports Journalists Association, took part in the workshop.

The three-day workshop was led and moderated by Mr. Idy Uyoe, an International and recognized sports consultant.

National Sports Federations were trained on the conceptual and practical elements of Sports Marketing within Olympic Sports Organizations  objectively to improve the marketing discipline within the organizations

“We met members from sports federations with in Rwanda and we had discussions specifically focusing on sports tourism on Wednesday. Sports tourism is an investment that could earn to Rwanda millions of dollars in returns,” he said.

On Thursday workshop looked at how sports of federations can engage with the private sector and stop depending on government funding,

The purpose of this model is to realize the need to move to a private-driven model. Idy also said that sports in Africa is not seen as a serious business but we need to build sports as an industry. If sports don’t have a marketing strategy, there is no way they can succeed.

Sports Organizations were trained on the conceptual and practical elements of Sports Marketing within Olympic Sports Organizations objectively to improve the marketing discipline within the organizations.

One of the trainee Emmanuel Murenzi from the cycling federation Ferwacy said that they have acquired a lot about marketing and tourism in sports and the next step is to implement what they have learned in order to attract private sponsors.

The three-day workshop was followed by a three-day “Integrated Marketing Strategy Session”, aimed at developing the Rwanda National Olympic and Sports Committee integrated marketing strategy after which the consultant will present the final marketing strategy document.

Speaking during the closing ceremony, RNOSC president, Amb. Valens Munyabagisha urged the participants to go and implement what they learned in the workshop while sharing with their workmates in their respective federations.

Le prix de la Femme Francophone de 2018 a été décerné à Rwemalika lors du 38ème congrès de l’Association Internationale des Maires Francophones (AIMF) à Lille – France. Ce prix a pour objectif de mettre en avant le sport au service du développement des territoires.

Le congrès se déroule du 05 au 07 Novembre sous le thème “Le sport et ses valeurs en ville”.

TODAY, DURING THE IOC SESSION IN BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA, NINE NEW INTERNATIONAL OLYMPIC COMMITTEE (IOC) MEMBERS WERE ELECTED, THREE RE-ELECTED AFTER EIGHT YEARS OF MEMBERSHIP AND FOUR FINISHING THEIR MANDATE WILL BECOME IOC HONORARY MEMBERS.

Five new individual Members (three women and two men) and four representatives of the constituents of the Olympic Movement were elected, following a proposal by the IOC Executive Board in July 2018.

Individual Members

• Daina Gudzineviciute (Lithuania), President of the Lithuanian Olympic Committee and five-time Olympian.
• Felicite Rwemarika (Rwanda), First Vice-President of the Rwandan Olympic Committee.
• Camilo Pérez López Moreira (Paraguay), President of the Paraguayan Olympic Committee.
• Giovanni Malagò (Italy), President of the Italian Olympic Committee – effective from 1 January 2019.
• Samira Asghari (Afghanistan), member of the Athletes’ Entourage Commission since 2014.

Representatives of the Olympic Movement

Two Members linked to a function within a National Olympic Committee (NOC) or world or continental association of NOCs:

• William Frederick Blick (Uganda), President of the Ugandan Olympic Committee.

Three Members were subject to re-election after eight years of membership, and were all re-elected: HH Amir Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani (QAT), HRH Prince Feisal Al Hussein (JOR) and Mrs Marisol Casado (ESP).

IOC Member Mr Sergey Bubka (membership linked to his function as President of the NOC of Ukraine) had his status changed from Member representing a NOC to Individual Member.

The following IOC Members finishing their terms of office at the end of 2018 because of the age limit were granted the status of IOC Honorary Member.

As of 1 January 2019: HRH Prince Tunku Imran (MAS), elected in 2006; Mr Mario Pescante (ITA), elected in 1994; and Mr Sam Ramsamy (RSA), elected 1995.

With immediate effect: Mr Gian-Franco Kasper (SUI), elected in 2000.

Mr Richard Peterkin (LCA) and Mr Barry Maister (NZL) will also both retire at the end of this year.

Mr Ivo Ferriani (ITA) was elected to the IOC Executive Board as a member “with a view to representing the interests of the Olympic Winter International Federations”. He will serve a mandate of four years.
