Hachimantai City delegation visited the Rwanda National Olympic and Sports Committee ahead of second phase of Rwandan athletes training camp in Japan.

Yesterday, on 27th January 2020, the Hachimantai City – Japan delegation visited the Rwanda National Olympic and Sports Committee (RNOSC).

The visit aimed at preparing the second phase of training camp which is set to take place in Hachimantai city in June 2020 as part of preparations of Rwandan athletes ahead of this year’s Olympic Games which will be held in Tokyo from the 24th July 2020 to the 9th August 2020.

It is expected that Hachimantai city will host the Cycling, Beach Volleyball and Athletics teams for a training camp of maximum 1 month before the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

RNOSC held a meeting with Hachimantai and both parties agreed on some points such as disciplines to be considered and cultural exchange event. 

The Hachimantai delegation was composed by the Hachimantai City Vice mayor Mr. OKADA Hisashi, Hachimantai City Regional development division assistant manager Mr. HIGASHIMOTO Shigeki and Hachimantai City Region development section staff Mr. YOSHIDA Chikara.

With a perfect guided tour by the RNOSC President Amb. Valens Munyabagisha accompanied by the RNOSC Executive Director Mr. Jean De Dieu Mukundiyukuri, the delegation visited different sports facilities including Amahoro National Stadium, Kigali Arena and Africa Rising Cycling Center based in Musanze District – Northern Province.

On the same day, the guests had an opportunity to be received by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Sports, Mr. Shema Maboko Didier.

“I strongly commend your partnership with our National Olympic Committee and we are happy that it’s taking a high level. The Ministry of Sports is committed to support the Rwandan athletes before and during Tokyo 2020.” Permanent Secretary said.

In May 2018, The Rwanda National Olympic and Sports Committee signed a memorandum of understanding with Hachimantai city of Japan ahead of preparations for Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

The first phase of training camp of Team Rwanda in Hachimantai as part of this agreement which took place from 21 July 2019 to the 15th August 2019 has already contributed to the good performance of Rwandan Cycling and Beach Volleyball Teams in All African Games which took place in Rabat, Morocco from 19-31 August 2019. Both Teams won 3 bronze medals (2 cycling, 1 beach Volleyball) following an intensive training camp in Hachimantai city.

Rugby: Thirty qualified as level 1 Coaches under the Olympic Solidarity grant.

From the 06th to the 10th of January 2020, with support of Olympic Solidarity through Rwanda National Olympic and Sports Committee, the Rwanda Rugby Federation hosted a level 1 technical course for coaches and development officers at Centre d’Accueil St Francois d’Assise.

Thirty trainees included twenty men and ten female participants and were trained by experts John Bosco Muamba from Rugby African and Dr. Joseph Kalanzi from Uganda on major aspects which included the technical difference between the 7’s and 15 aside rugby, first aid, and fitness as well as strengthening and conditioning.

John Bosco Muamba who was grateful for the turn up said participants were motivated and eager to learn. He thanked them for being good students. He also urged the coaches and federation to put in plan a level 2 training course in the future.

The president of Rwanda Rugby Federation, Mr. Tharcisse Kamanda thanked the trainers and trainees plus Rwanda National Olympic and Sports Committee (RNOSC) for making the training a success.

“Let me take this opportunity to thank Rwanda National Olympic and Sports Committee for the support offered for this training to happen and I urge the coaches, and owners of different clubs to implement and put what they have learned into action in order to promote and develop the sport countrywide” Kamanda said.

He added that the federation will appoint a committee in charge of making a follow up urging the participants who also worked as rugby development officers to file reports on what they implemented.

One of the participants Ernestine Ibemaso who represented Gorilla girl’s rugby team from Musanze also said that she has benefited by learning the essential skills on how to give first aid treatment to injured rugby players as well as the tactical difference of between the 7 and 15 aside game.

In his closing remarks, the RNOSC Secretary-General, Mr. Alexis Sharangabo mentioned that the training is part of the program aimed to develop rugby in Rwanda.

“When we train coaches, we take into consideration the impact and look at the indicators as well as make a follow up taking into consideration the numbers we have trained in the previous year’s” Sharangabo added.

The RNOSC President receives in his offices the Chargé d’Affaires in the Embassy of Japan to Rwanda.

Today, 04th December 2019, The President of Rwanda National Olympic and Sports Committee, Amb. Valens Munyabagisha receives in his offices the Chargé d’Affaires in the Embassy of Japan to Rwanda, Ms. Yuko Hotta.

The visit aims at boosting the bilateral relations of two institutions, preparing together the visit of Mr. Ryosuke Ando from Japanese Olympic Games Cabinet Secretariat to the RNOSC which is scheduled on 23rd December 2019 and donation ceremony of some equipment to Rwanda Triathlon Federation. They have also discussed about the preparations of Rwandan delegation for Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

In May 2018, The Rwanda National Olympic and Sports Committee signed a memorandum of understanding with Hachimantai city of Japan ahead of preparations for Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. The first phase of training camp of Team Rwanda in Hachimantai as part of this agreement which took place from 21 July 2019 to the 15th August 2019 has already immensely contributed to the good performance of Rwandan Cycling and Beach Volleyball Teams in All African Games which held in Rabat, Morocco from 19-31 August 2019 where they took home 3 bronze medals respectively.

The second phase is set to take place in the same city, Hachimantai in June 2020 before the Olympic Games.

Handball: Rwanda to host regional handball tournament.

Rwanda has been confirmed as the hosts of the 38th East and Central Africa Handball Federation (ECAHF) Senior Club Championship 2019 due December 2-7.

The regional championship will attract top clubs from Kenya, Tanzania, DRC, Uganda, Zambia and Rwanda in the men’s category, while the women’s competition, also to be held in Kigali, will be contested by teams from Uganda, Tanzania, DR Congo, Kenya and Rwanda.

The games will be hosted at two venues; Kimisagara Youth Centre courts and the Amahoro National Stadium.

In an interview with Times Sport on Tuesday, Jean Paul Ngarambe, the Secretary-General of Rwanda Handball Federation, said that “It is a pleasure to host the tournament again” having previously organised it in 2004 and 2015.

As the hosts, Rwanda will field three teams in the men’s category; champions Police, APR and Gicumbi, while only UR-Rukara will represent in women’s fray.

Police won the men’s title in 2015 when the tournament was last held in Rwanda.

Rwandan strikes silver at Athens Marathon 2019.

Rwanda’s long distance runner Felicien Muhitira has won a silver medal at the 37th Athens Classic Marathon after finishing second on Sunday, in Greece.

Muhitira, 25, led the race from the off and was in command until the 600 metres mark to the line when Kenya’s John Kipkorir Komen sprinted past him to strike gold.

Komen won the 42km marathon in two hours, 16 minutes and 34 seconds, nine seconds ahead of Muhitira who was the only Rwandan in the race. Greek Konstantinos Gkelaouzos (2:19:02) finished third to settle for bronze.

In the women’s event, home athlete Eleftheria Petroulaki was the champion after using two hours, 45 minutes and 50 seconds.

Regarded as one of the finest distance athletes has had over the last decade, Muhitira is a household name at French half-marathon race Marvejols-Mende following his third consecutive victory in July.

This year’s Athens Classic attracted about 20,000 participants from across the world.
