Democratic Republic of Congo’s Nancy Onya beat Kenya’s Shufa Changawa in three sets in the final to win the 2016 Rwanda Tennis Open women title on Sunday at Amahoro National Stadium outdoor tennis courts in Remera, Kigali.

Meanwhile, Onya’s compatriot Denis Indondo easily overcame Uganda’s Duncan Mugabe to claim men’s singles title. Indondo, the reigning African champion, won in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 to walk away with the trophy and US$1000 in prize money.

“I am very happy to have won this competition, Mugabe is a good player and beating him is a great feeling,” said Indondo.

In an interview, Mugabe, he said: “First of all, I would like to congratulate Indondo, he played well and deserved to win, I have suffered from low game intensity due to a hamstring injury which I have been carrying for the past two months.”

The thrilling final between the best female players in the tournament, lasted for two hours and forty five minutes. The winner walked away with a trophy and US$750 prize money.

Kenya’s number one Changawa displayed stunning skills to claim the first set 6-3 but failed to capitalise on that momentum losing the second set 5-7 as Onya upped her game which gave her the upper hand in the deciding set, which she won easily 6-0.

Onya said of her win, “I am very excited to win this competition, in the first set, I was a bit inconsistent but thank God I managed to come back and consequently won, I must thank Rwanda Tennis Federation for giving us a good platform to showcase our talents.”

The one-week long tournament attracted 32 players in the women singles category.

En-route to the final and eventually the title, Onya defeated Rwanda’s number one Meganne Ingabire in the semi-finals on Friday, while Rwanda’s number two Gisele Umumararungu was bundled out in the quarter-finals at the hands of Changawa.

Altogether, the third edition of Rwanda Open attracted a total of 161 players from Rwanda, Kenya, Tanzania, DR Congo, Burundi and hosts Rwanda. It was sponsored Rwanda Tennis Federation and the Ministry of Sports and Culture.

Uganda’s number one Mugabe reached the final after overcoming DR Congo’s Surma Nkulufa 7-5, 6-3 while Indondo knocked out Kenya’s number two Ibrahim Kibet. Indondo beat Kibet 7-6, 6-4.

Meanwhile, in the doubles category that concluded on Friday, Indondo and Nkulufa, from DR Congo, won the US$300 prize money after beating Rwanda’s pair of Olivier Havugimana and Dieudonne Habiyambere 6-2, 6-3.

In the women’s fray, Changawa and Nancy defeated Ingabire and Gisele Umumararungu 6-3, 6-3, to pocket US$300.

Rwanda national women sitting volleyball team are hoping for a good start to the 2016 Rio Paralympic Games when they face top ranked China in the opening game of Group B today at Riocentro – Pavilion 6. The team captain, Liliane Mukobwankawe, has said the team is ready for the challenge against China.

“China are the best team in the world by far and in addition, they’re also the Paralympic Games defending champions, but we have prepared well and are  determined to give them a hard time,” Mukobwankawe told Saturday Sport by phone from Rio.

She added that, “Since arriving here it’s been a hard week of training and everyone is in an upbeat mood to face the reigning champions, we may be the underdogs in this tournament but we have to give our best and fight for the pride of our country.”

Debutants Rwanda becomes the first African women sitting volleyball team to compete at the world’s biggest quadrennial sporting event of athletes with physical disabilities. The team is also the 2015 Africa Para volley champions.

Mukobwankawe noted, “Our aim is to get better results compared to our previous meetings, it is tough to win against the best teams in the world but we can dare to dream that we can may be cause an upset.”

THE RIO 2016 GAMES PROVIDED THE BEST POSSIBLE ENVIRONMENT FOR PEAK PERFORMANCES.

Rio_2016_all_tab_small

THE RIO 2016 GAMES PROVIDED THE BEST POSSIBLE ENVIRONMENT FOR PEAK PERFORMANCES. ATHLETES ENJOYED WORLD-CLASS FACILITIES, INCLUDING A SUPERB VILLAGE, ALL LOCATED IN ONE OF THE WORLD’S MOST BEAUTIFUL CITIES, IN A COMPACT LAYOUT FOR MAXIMUM CONVENIENCE.

The competition venues were clustered in four zones – Barra, Copacabana, Deodoro and Maracanã – and connected by a high-performance transport ring. Nearly half of the athletes could reach their venues in less than 10 minutes, and almost 75 per cent could do so in less than 25 minutes. Of the 34 competition venues, eight underwent some permanent works, seven were totally temporary and nine were constructed as permanent legacy venues.

The Rio Games also celebrated and showcased sport, thanks to the city’s stunning setting and a desire to lift event presentation to new heights. At the same time, Rio 2016 was an opportunity to deliver the broader aspirations for the long-term future of the city, region and country – an opportunity to hasten the transformation of Rio de Janeiro into an even greater global city.

OLYMPIC GAMES RIO 2016 : RETROSPECTIVE

  • Johanna Umurungi, nageuse, 100m Papillon
  • Eloi Imaniraguha, Nageur, 50m nage libre
  • Adrien Niyonshuti, Cycliste sur Route
  • Nathan Byukusenge, Cycliste Tout Terrain

One week after the end of the 31st Olympic Games which took place in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, here a retrospective of the Rwandan delegation journey.

Most of the Rwandan athletes and officials reached Rio de Janeiro a few days before the beginning of the celebrations. Full of enthusiasm and leaded by Adrien Niyonshuti (Road cycling), they proudly paraded and represented Rwanda during the opening ceremony under the eyes of the 70 000 spectators that filled up the Maracanã Stadium. What a beautiful experience!

Team Rwanda Olympic:

  • Johanna Umurungi, swimmer, 100m butterfly
  • Eloi Imaniraguha, Nageur, 50m freestyle
  • Adrien Niyonshuti, Road cycling
  • Nathan Byukusenge, Mountain bike
  • SallomeNyirarukundo, Athletics, 10000m
  • Claudette Mukasikindi, Athletics Marathon
  • Ambroise Uwiragiye, Athletics Marathon.

August 6th:  Adrien Niyonsuti opened the road to the Rwandan Athletes. In the middle of the best cyclist of the world, Adrien had been plagued by bad luck. First of all Victim of a mechanical issue, he fell down at the 50th kilometer and was forced to abandon. A deception for this Rwandan sport icon which was hoping to record his name the Olympic road cyclist ranking.

For the women, the young Johanna Umurungi launched the festivity. The 20-years-old swimmer who received a wild to participate to the 100 meters butterfly did not realize the masterstroke. 4th out of 5 of her heat in 1 minute, 11 seconds and 92 hundredth, she did not qualify for the next row. She could still be pleased since she beat her personal record.

August 11th: Also directly invited, Eloi Imaniraguha participated to the 50 meters freestyle competition. He unfortunately finished 8th and last of his heat in 26 seconds and 43 hundredth and quitted the competition after the first race. A bit of deception but such a great experience for Eloi which was participating to his first Olympic Games and will keep on improving!

August 12th: For the opening of the athletics trials, Sallome Nyirarukundo was lucky to take part of one of the most incredible race of those Olympic Games. On the starting line of the 10 000 meters, she ran aside the famous Almaz Ayana who pulverized the world record (29 minutes, 17 seconds and 45 hundredth). Our champion finished 27th out 37th and ran in 32 minutes 7 seconds and 80 hundredth.

August 14th: It was the turn of Claudette Mukasikindi to enter the competition. She ran the Marathon in 3 hours 5 minutes and 57 second and finished 126th out of 157 participants.

August 21st: For the Olympic Games closing day, two Rwandan athletes did perform. Ambroise Uwiragiye ranked 99th out of 155 Marathon runners. The Kenyan Eliud Kipchoge ran in 2 hours 8 minutes and 44 seconds and won the gold medal. It took 17 more minutes to Ambroise to finish the race.

In Mountain Bike, Nathan Byukusenge got rejoined by another competitor at the 4th lap and was forced to stop. For the anecdote, the same happened the famous Peter Sagan!

No medals but a great adventure for those 7 athletes and the few officials of the Rwanda Olympic team. Welcome back!
